Visiting San Diego for the first time and unsure where to start when creating your itinerary? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
After living in San Diego for almost three and a half years, I have developed a strong list of must-visit spots in the city. Some of these are my personal faves and hidden gems, while others are simply popular San Diego hotspots. I’ve broken out ideas and suggestions based on preferences - adventure, entertainment, views, food, and seasonal opportunities!
For your first visit to San Diego, consider some of the below recommendations!
For adventures:
Balboa Park - One of the city’s shining stars is Balboa Park. The 1,200 acre park is full of museums, trails, gardens, and architectural highlights.
Eco Boat Rentals - If you want to see San Diego from a more unique perspective, try viewing it from a pedal boat in America’s Cup Harbor!
San Diego Zoo - As the most visited zoo in the country, the San Diego Zoo is an absolute must. In addition to the hundreds and hundreds of species on display, the zoo has a strong background and passion for conservation. If you want to experience more animals, visit the Safari Park in Carlsbad!
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve - Looking for a great San Diego hike? Consider exploring Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and enjoy stunning views of the ocean.
Julian - If you’re excited to adventure out of San Diego’s immediate neighborhoods, consider visiting the mountain town of Julian. The small town is known for their pies and being a great autumn stop.
Old Town - Site of one of the earliest settlements in San Diego, Old Town offers a variety of experiences, including haunted tours, historic sites, and more.
For entertainment:
Rooftop Cinema Club - One of the perks of living in sunny San Diego is the ample opportunity for outdoor activities. Rooftop Cinema Club offers an open-air cinema experience, for a good majority of the year. And if you’re a dog owner like us, enjoy the occasional dog-friendly showing!
Petco Park - Home to the San Diego Padres, Petco Park is a great place to go if you’re visiting for the first time and looking to fill your time with fun.
The Rady Shell - Take in a concert or symphony show at The Rady Shell, a unique and memorable venue. With a visually stunning shape and downtown views, The Rady Shell is a great place to consider checking out.
Legoland - Of course, Legoland. The amusement park, located in Carlsbad, is especially popular among families with younger kids.
For views:
Sunset Cliffs - One of the most popular spots in San Diego, Sunset Cliffs offers up unmatched views. This is one place I especially love taking friends and family who come visit.
Cabrillo National Monument - Situated on the tip of Point Loma’s peninsula, Cabrillo National Monument features expansive views of downtown San Diego.
Hotel del Coronado - The iconic Hotel del Coronado is a sight you don’t want to miss. Whether you’re staying there or not, the Hotel del offers architectural and sunset views.
Seaport Village - In San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter sits Seaport Village, a shopping and eating center that showcases both water and downtown views.
La Jolla Cove - Throughout the year, La Jolla visitors can enjoy the sights of the California coastline and adorable, albeit loud, sea lions.
