San Diego Sights: Old Town

In the past year or two, one area of San Diego we’ve been frequenting a lot more is Old Town. Known as the oldest neighborhood in San Diego, Old Town is a great place to play tourist, whether you’re a local or visiting from out of town.

Mixing history and culture, the destination offers plenty to see and do. Old Town is rich in shops, from cute knick knacks and novelty candy to unique garden items and cultural merchandise. Additionally, the neighborhood has made sure to highlight, maintain, and celebrate historic sites. Those sites include the Serra Museum which chronicles Old Town’s original inhabitants, the first publicly owned schoolhouse, and the original office of the San Diego Union newspaper.

If you’re looking for adventure in Old Town, consider checking out the Whaley House. Opened as a museum in 1960, the Whaley House has been dubbed the most haunted house in the US. For dog owners searching for a place to eat, Casa de Freds is a great restaurant to dine at. Their dog menu features numerous dish options, so you don’t have to worry about your pooch staring longingly at your tacos (we have experience with that). You could spend a good chunk of the day just enjoying all that Old Town has to offer, including other eateries and quaint coffeeshops, the nearby Heritage County Park full of Victorian houses, and colorful artwork and murals.

Overall, Old Town has plenty for San Diego locals and visitors from out of town to take in. You get a real taste of the city’s vibrant history, can support local shops and businesses, and enjoy some authentic food and drinks.
