5 Must-Visit San Diego Coffee Shops
Being from Seattle, I have strong opinions on what makes a good coffee shop. I believe a must-visit coffeehouse goes beyond just the cup of coffee, and also extends to the experience it can provide. Since moving to San Diego, we have tried a bunch of different spots, and I’ve even found some coffee shops I regularly revisit. Before I knew it, I had started compiling a list of recommendations and favorite locations. Now, there are many reasons why I would designate a coffee shop as a must-visit, including delicious java, unique views, a fun atmosphere, and a yummy food menu. While San Diego coffee shops may not have the praise and recognition of those in Seattle (in my opinion), there are top-quality cafes that both locals and tourists should frequent.

Public Square Coffee House
8278 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa, CA 91942
One of my favorite East County spots, Public Square Coffee House is a quaint shop with indoor and outdoor seating that’s the perfect place to get some work done or meet with friends. The coffee shop strongly emphasizes connection, with a meeting space that encourages device-free interactions. Along with coffee and cafe beverages, Public Square Coffee House also offers a menu of sugar scones, breakfast sandwiches, chai parfaits, and much more.
Better Buzz coffee roasters
A popular San Diego chain, Better Buzz Coffee Roasters provides customers with a strong cup of coffee and a fun, Instagrammable environment. Founded in 2002 by college students and starting out as a coffee cart, Better Buzz features a menu of coffee classics, sandwiches, and seasonal pastries. With multiple locations throughout the city, Better Buzz is an easy choice when you’re looking for a caffeinated “buzz”.
Spill the Beans
555 Market St., San Diego, CA 92101
813 W Harbor Dr. Unit C-7, San Diego, CA 92101
With Spill the Beans, you can pair your cup of coffee with some spectacular views and delicious bagels. The two locations in Gaslamp Quarter and Seaport Village are perfectly picturesque, allowing customers to soak up some spectacular sights while sipping on their Americano and enjoying the latest flavor of the month bagel. Plus, it’s one of my personal favorites!
Garden Coffee
2611 Congress St., San Diego, CA 92110
Tucked away in Old Town is Garden Coffee, an eclectic coffee shop serving up lattes, gluten free treats, and a unique environment. It’s a great place to gather with friends or family visiting from out of town. Or, order yourself a mocha and enjoy it while wandering around Old Town, the first European settlement in California and the oldest neighborhood in San Diego.
Dark Horse coffee Roasters
First opening in 2013, Dark Horse Coffee Roasters has become a San Diego staple with a loyal following. Priding themselves on offering customers quality coffee from beans roasted in-house, Dark Horse has a reputation as strong as their brew. Along with your cup of joe, sample a variety of cafe goodies, like donuts, ice cream, and seasonal flavors.
